Northbrook Remembers: A Holocaust Remembrance and Public Dedication

Due to extremely low temperatures, this event has been moved indoors and will take place at the Northbrook Public Library in the Civic Room (First Floor).

The Chicago Jewish Alliance invites you to gather with us for a public act of remembrance, education, and truth.

What this event is:
(International Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed globally on January 27.)
• A community gathering to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day
• A dedication of an educational Holocaust history sign in First Amendment Square
• A moment to stand for historical accuracy in a public space

Why we’re gathering:
First Amendment Square in Northbrook was recently used to turn the Holocaust into a political metaphor—distorting Jewish history and minimizing Jewish loss. In response, CJA partnered with the Illinois Holocaust Museum to install a sign that redirects from slogans to facts, history, and education.

What you’ll experience:
• Remarks from Holocaust Survivors Sami Steigmann and Marion Deichmann
• Reflections from community leaders and Northbrook residents
• Words from Chicago Jewish Alliance leadership
• A formal dedication of the educational sign

About the sign:
The sign includes a QR code linking to curated resources from the Illinois Holocaust Museum, explaining what makes the Holocaust uniquely Jewish and why accuracy matters. It is a permanent reminder that the Holocaust was not abstract or symbolic—it was the systematic genocide of six million Jews, with entire families erased.

The memorial sign will remain on display throughout January for continued opportunities to visit, reflect, and learn. If you are unable to visit in person, we invite you to explore our “Never Forget” digital archive, created with the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center, where you can read survivor stories that preserve memory and meaning for generations to come.

We invite you to stand with us where public speech happens, to remember, to learn, and to affirm a simple truth:

Memory is not a metaphor. History deserves truth.
